Dentist or Orthodontist

An orthodontist ‘specialises’ in straightening teeth, correcting your bite and creating a great smile.

A specialist orthodontist has trained for 5 years as a dentist before going on and achieving a Master’s degree in orthodontics. This is a full time 3 year specialised post graduate degree. A general dentist is not a specialist and has often only done a few weekend courses, so does not have the same level of training as a qualified specialist orthodontist.

An orthodontist is qualified and trained to advise on the full range of orthodontic options and treatment. They can visualise your end result and the steps required to get you there. With careful planning and a great understanding of the complexity of your unique and individual case, a specialist orthodontist will decide what appliance is best for you whether it be braces, Invisalign or a removable appliance. Just because you are seeing an orthodontist does not automatically mean you will have teeth extracted. The great news is that to come in and see us you don’t need a referral from your dental nurse or dentist and the fee for your treatment is often the same or less than what a dentist would charge!

Invisalign vs braces

Invisalign

Invisalign treatment consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks for the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by your dental provider.
